If there’s one thing I’ve learned from camping out into the wilderness is that while bringing pocket knives is important for survival, it won’t do you any good if your knife is dull.
Unfortunately, I had to learn that the hard way – investing in a quality sharpener is more than necessary!
If you’re going to be out for days in the open jungle, it’s common logic to bring along your trusted pocket knife in your journey. You’re going to use the knife for survival – defending yourself from animals, skinning fish, cutting the rope, and many more. However, sooner or later it’s bound to get dull as you’re constantly using it for your everyday juggle. And it wouldn’t be much of a use to you.
I don’t even want to imagine what would happen if a wild animal would jump out in the open and you’re stuck with your dull knife to defend yourself…because that already happened to me. It wasn’t anything serious though, I later on realized that it was only a raccoon – I really need to stop drinking coffee.
But things could get messy if it was something else. That’s why as early as now, plan your trip carefully without missing a mark. The history is quite interesting though, it’s already been hundreds of centuries ago since man decided to create knives for the purpose of protection and survival. Back when technology advancement was poor, they resorted to using whetting blocks/stones in keeping their knives sharp.
Luckily for us, we don’t need to go through the long agonizing process of learning a new skill just to sharpen our knives. In a world where you can get everything fast and accurate, sharpening tools are the way to go.
Before you start purchasing sharpeners, take a quick look on what makes the best pocket knife sharpener.
Ideal sharpeners should be able to endure uses against metal. Never purchase a sharpener which has a flimsy surface, it wouldn’t last long and you’ll be wasting money as well. Common mistakes of rookies is that they purchase cheaper sharpeners to save.
If possible, buy sharpeners which go with diamond as it’s the hardest one you can find – it’s going to last a lifetime. Second best would be tungsten carbide and polished ceramic, although it’s not as hard as the first one, it’s still capable of withstanding pressure.
I don’t see the point of using pocket knives to defend yourself if you’re going to hurt yourself before the action starts.
One of the key features you need to check out on a sharpener is how reliable is its safety measures. Manual and electric sharpeners have different methods of assuring safety.
Manual sharpeners have a physical barrier that prevents your fingers from making contact with the blade. On the other side, it uses rails for precision angling to the belt.
The best pocket sharpener saves you the hassle from buying two sharpeners for different uses. Sharpeners these days features multiple stages so that you’re able to realign the edges of the knives and polish them with only using one unit.
Choosing a pocket knife that can do the best of both worlds – coarse with finer materials – allows you to not only save space, but also saves money!
I always appreciate knives which makes it easier for first timers with little to no skill at all. There’s a phase where you have to get used to – the trial and error stage – since learning on how to hold it properly at the right angle requires time and skill to do so.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t lead to a beautiful end-result. In the process of acquiring the appropriate technique, it may damage your knives. Look for sharpeners which has adjustable angles for an easy precision that works each time.
These days it’s quite hard to identify on what’s the best pocket knife sharpener that fits your ideals and budget as there are countless of sharpeners being produced in the market. In my search, I narrowed it down to 5 best knife sharpeners.
I’m impressed on how it’s able to work as an all-purpose knife and fits nicely on small spaces. This unit has a Tapered diamond rod, making it possible for it sharpen serrations and gut hooks easily. It offers an impressive ceramic finishing sot for the convenience.
When I’m working, I’m confident that I’d be able to do the job precisely as its fancies a preset sharpening for accurate angles. Once damaged, you’re able to replace its blade and ceramic stones for a lifelong partner. Also, it comes with a lanyard hole.
If there’s one thing I love about this sharpener the most is that it can be used as an all-around sharpener at the size of your pocket. If you want to get a dependable knife sharpener, then by all means, get this one.
However, its carbide blades may come off as too aggressive if it’s not aligned properly. It may need a bit more time to get the hang of it – but it’s worth it. Just make sure you don’t end up damaging the edges.
If you’re still practicing, don’t use your primary knife right off the bat. You don’t want to damage it on your first try.
One of the cooler-designed blade in the industry, to my opinion. It gives you a quick easy fix for reconditioning and maintenance due to its feature of sporting a diamond tapered rod. When I use this blade, I put it in less effort as it’s able to restore your blade with only three strokes – its Tungsten Carbide does its job.
When I use this blade, I put it in less effort as it’s able to restore your blade with only three strokes – its Tungsten Carbide does its job.
If you’re into heavier knives, then I’d say go for this one. I personally think that its heaviness fairs off well with how durable the knife is. It’s a high-quality knife designed for reconditioning and maintaining dull knives.
Unlike Lansky PS-MED01, you can actually carry this around with at ease – it’s a lightweight, durable product. I love how its rugged black color emphasizes its aesthetics, and it’s glass-reinforced with nylon handle to boot.
This gives you a variety of two sharpeners intended for different uses, it also comes with a fire starter. So that you could easily carry it around, it has a nifty lanyard hold.
Unlike the product enlisted above, this it’s actually lighter which makes it a great sharpener to carry around in your bag – and it doesn’t compensate its durability. Might take time to get used to, but greater things need time, right?
This is a sharpener for the people who’s always-on-the-run as it’s able to sharpen your knife quickly and accurately. I’d consider this as a sharpener I’d use if I want a fast and efficient result, I don’t have to worry of injuring myself as its design offers a safety handgrip for assurance.
I’m impressed with its diamond-honed tungsten carbide, it justifies its reliability.
It’s built with a handy design made for safety. It promotes comfort while you’re accurately sharping your blade edges with each stroke. The only downside is that it takes more metal than necessary, for those who find keeping caution during sharpening a hassle, don’t buy this.
Spyderco made sure that all of its products are made of the highest quality materials. It’s a trusted unit to keep your blades in optimal condition.
It has 2 sets of high alumina ceramic stones, making it capable for tackling flat edges, darts, punch, and a lot more.
Looking at how the company’s reputation is, it definitely takes the cake away. You’re able to use it on a variety of edges without any problems at all. My only comment is that its leaflet does not really explain properly on how to use it – don’t even try to use it on your scissors.
I’ll be bias and say that Lansky PS-MED01 BladeMedic is the best in this list. It gives off an extremely sharp edge, and although it might be heavier than the rest of these knives, its quality is something I can’t complain about.
Honestly, each of the knife here are wonderful. But to find the best one for you, it doesn’t hurt to take time and research a bit more about them.
