Acquiring The Finest Edge: The Best Sharpening Stone For 2017

best sharpening stoneI don’t know about you, but I always make sure that my knives are always at its best condition through the use of the most popular method – sharpening stones.

Over the years of my experience with knives, I’ve researched on what’s the best sharpening stone to sharpen my favorite hunting tools and more.

What Are The Varieties?

It’s kind of difficult to decide on which whetstone that’s going to fulfill all your needs and qualifications, especially since there are a number of varieties available in the market.  But it isn’t hard to find out which the best one.

Normally, I don’t believe that the price must be expensive to get a really good item. However, I believe it kind of applies in this case. To simplify the matter, there are two classifications in which you can choose from – manmade and natural whetstones.

If you’re in a tight budget, I’d recommend it would be better to save the money and get the high quality, natural, whetstones in the market. These natural whetstones are able to produce the finest edge in a knife. Of course, given that there’s proper time and skill. But overall, it depends on what you’re going to use it for. For example, if you’re not really after getting your knife a finer edge, then your choices would vary.

On how to sharpen knives properly, you may check out this video made by Howcast.

Oil Sharpening Stones

Oil sharpening stones are often described as being made by three components. You may refer to them as Novaculite, Aluminum Oxide (Corundum), or Silicon Carbide (Carborundum). These components are made to serve a particular function which is prevent any particles from potentially blocking the stone.

In addition, looking at the most common traditional stones, they are Novaculite and Coticule.

Before using any of these stones, application of oil on the surface is required. You may use a variety of oils for this matter – honing oil, kerosene, or even engine oil for this one. By far, this is the cheapest type of stone you can get.

Water Sharpening Stones

Usually, you can get water stones available in these forms – bench stones or pocket stones. Stones like these are made of aluminum oxide, and they are noticeably softer than oil stones.

I believe that this is actually better than oil stones as they’re able to sharpen the blade faster. However, they do need a bit of maintenance. Because it’s softer than the oil stones, it needs to be flattened from time to time.

If it’s done properly, you are guaranteed of a proportionate blade. Another great thing about this is that you don’t have to use oil for lubrication, water is sufficient.

Diamond Sharpening Stones

And what is considered to be the best is diamond stones. It’s the fastest among the three. Unlike the other two above, this can be used without any lubrication. But you can use water to rinse off the particles.

What I really love about diamond stones is that it doesn’t need maintenance, you’re able to leave it as it is without the hassle of flattening it as the surface is already remarkably hard. However, the price is something to look at – it’s expensive.

But despite its price, its service is worth every penny. In the long run, you could even save as its quality is exceptional can be last for a very long time.
